On May 31st, 2025, NYU’s 370 Jay St. building received members from all the different environments that have come together and made possible the SMART project: student participants and their families, Teaching Artists, educators and other high school personnel, scientists involved in the project and other researchers from the neuro-arts / neuro-music / sound and adjacent fields. All of them were curious to discover more about the evolution of the project and, especially, about the artistic creations made by our participants!

After a brief introduction to the project, the different institutions and organizations involved, and an acknowledgement of our funding sources (the European Commission through an MSCA Global Postdoctoral fellowship, and the GRAMMY Museum Foundation through a 2023 Research Grant), the event moved onto introducing our visual artists and their work, in addition to be photography teachers within the SMART project and in other contexts. Then, the main event took place, in which attendees could navigate the space to check all the photography projects or sit down to listen to the music compositions, all made by the students participating in the SMART project.
Students proudly presented their works and answered questions, and families were very proud of their children and happy to share this moment with all researchers, TAs, and educators involved.
The day continued with the music composition TAs, all from the American Composers Orchestra, presenting themselves, their education initiatives, and their compositions.
We finished the Exhibition with some concluding remarks highlighting the hard work and long trajectory that this inspiring, innovative, but very challenging project is performing, and what the future plans are. We are beyond grateful to all students, families, high schools, educators and Teaching Artists for making this project possible and for joining us during this celebration.
The SMART Exhibition was the perfect way of closing the Outgoing Phase of LV’s MSCA funded period, and the work carried out during the past 2 years, comprising the intervention periods for 4 different participant groups (2 in music and 2 in photography composition and edition). Thank you all for coming and celebrating with us!!
